Rockstar Games have released the debut gameplay footage for their upcoming crime-bust-em-up, L.A. Noire giving a glimpse into the mechanics of clue hunting, witness interrogation and combat. Taking cues from the mild mannered John Marston of Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire goes even further with Detective Phelps being an all round decent guy and straight-laced cop so expect to serve the community rather than randomly beating them. But that doesn’t mean Phelps will be a push over as the video shows him gunning down some would-be thieves and brawling with other unsavoury characters. Using the framework of Rockstar titles, the game has a familiarity to it when Phelps is strolling about the city of LA and from what was shown, the combat mechanics also looks to play like a newer GTA game. However, there is a lot of emphasis on actually being a cop with the aforementioned witness interrogations and searching for clues shown in equal measures. I don’t think L.A. Noire would have ever strayed too far away from what we’ve come to expect from an open-world Rockstar game but there’s a reason why they’re the best at it and why gamers keep coming back for more. The addition of deciphering clues and cross-examining possible leads appear more than just mini-games too so it’ll be interesting to see what the next videos show before L.A. Noire is released in May.
