Over ten years ago, Crazy Taxi skidded its way onto Sega’s Dreamcast and today comes to the PS3 via PlayStation Network. Xbox 360 owners have a week to wait before it hits Xbox Live but trust me, it’s well worth it. For £6.29/$9.99/€7.99 or 800 MS Points, you’ll be getting one insane game that is unlike any other series. Pick up passengers and drive as fast as you can to their desired destination listening to the likes of Offspring and Bad Religion, a soundtrack that suited the speed and frantic gameplay perfectly. The challenge modes were my favourite with one larger-than-life bowling alley level consuming countless hours of my youth.
“If today were the debut of Crazy Taxi, we’re certain its unique blend of arcade action and precision driving would still lead it to become one of SEGA’s most popular titles,” said the publisher. And I don’t doubt it either. While it’s a shame that 360 gamers have to wait a week, PS3 players should give this one a try if they’re new to the franchise or take a very fast drive down memory lane if Crazy Taxi has been experienced before.
I’m really pleased that Dreamcast titles are coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 because it was a system that had its life cut far too early. And this is just the beginning too. Back in June, Sega announced that between 18 and 24 games would make the leap onto HD consoles. We’ve had Sonic Adventure and now Crazy Taxi with Space Channel 5 and Sega Bass Fishing coming next year so there’s at least 14 more to go!
