The next Metal Gear game starring Raiden will focus mainly on the robo-wonder and contain few if any existing characters. Franchise hero Solid Snake is rumoured to show his face since Metal Gear Solid: Rising fits between MGS2 and MGS4 but creative producer Shigenobu Matsuyama feels it necessary to appeal to newcomers as well as old. In an interview with gamesTM mag (via Connected Consoles), he said: “To answer you question about returning characters, we’re probably not going to show too many characters in Rising because, since it’s a new part of a series, we don’t really want to refer to and dwell upon the Metal Gear saga so much. We want newcomers to the game to come in and play freely without needing to know and understand the background of the whole Metal Gear Solid universe.”
Hideo Kojima’s masterpiece may have concluded brilliantly in Metal Gear Solid 4 but the narrative was still more twisted than approachable, something Matsuyama wants to avoid with Rising: “We don’t want to have it all tied up with the story from MGS2 or MGS4 and make it too complicated.” he added. The E3 reveal of Rising showed the game being more hack and slash than sneak-em-up which is already a change in direction for the franchise so an ‘easier’ story line seems to follow suit.
