UPDATE: Some new information about the game and its counterpart, Tekken X Street Fighter have been added to this article.
What better way to prove the importance of Comic-Con for video games than for Super Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono to reveal his next game. And this one’s a pretty big deal. Merging two of the biggest names in fighters, Street Fighter X Tekken has been announced for Xbox 360 and PS3. Based on the engine behind the latest Street Fighter games, the mechanics are likely be closer to that franchise than Tekken but the new fighter will include a Tag Team feature allowing players to choose two characters for special combos and assist attacks.
So not to leave anyone out, a second game was announced; Tekken X Street Fighter following the same concept but being developed by Namco Bandai whereas Capcom will be in charge of Street Fighter X Tekken. The only real details are that it exists so those who prefer Tekken as a 3D fighter won’t feel shortchanged.
In Street Fighter X Tekken, the gameplay will be on a 2D playing field with full 3D characters making the addition of Tekken fighters like Kauya Mishima and Nina Williams all the more interesting considering the two franchises play very differently. I’m eager to see how Namco handle the Street Fighter characters in their version. Alongside Tekken project lead Katsuhiro Harada, Ono commented on his crossover saying “This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.”
Before the announcement, there were rumours that such a game was in development but it would be more of a Capcom vs Namco affair. The two that were announced will clearly be only using Street Fighter and Tekken characters but still, very exciting times for fighting fans with the genre experiencing a renaissance of sorts. I can’t wait but will have to make do with the debut trailer and some screenshots found after the break. It’ll have to do!
