CORRECTION: Apologies but I misread an article about the name Downfall. It isn’t anything to do with Tomb Raider but was a new IP from Crystal Dynamics. The post has been altered to reflect this.
Eurogamer‘s rumour of a new Tomb Raider game coming late 2011 may have caused quite a stir online but some of the more hardcore fans of the franchise aren’t convinced of its legitimacy. Over at Tomb Raider Forums, a thread was started following the initial story and was quickly commented on by those expressing their doubt. Member Aussie500 picked apart the rumour saying a Winter 2011 release for the next Tomb Raider game wouldn’t be much of a surprise considering Tomb Raider: Underworld came out in 2008. Not to mention last year‘s confirmation from Ian Livingstone, life president of Eidos. The name Downfall was a now cancelled game by Crystal Dynamics that had nothing to do with Lara Croft or the Tomb Raider franchise. The alleged new postings of concept art from Joel Boucquemont was also debunked when TRF members revealed there wasn’t actually anything on the site that hadn’t been seen before.
Clearly it’s far to early for Square Enix to comment on the possibility of a new Tomb Raider or indeed specifics of content because at this stage, it could change dramatically. And with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light still without an official release date, Square would concentrate on promoting its launch rather than overshadowing it with news of the next full Tomb Raider.
So what has been learned? Well a new Tomb Raider is in development, something that was discovered a year ago and it’s very unlikely that any of the artwork found on Boucquemont’s site relates to it. Downfall was a game cancelled a couple of years ago and its own IP not an extension of TR at all. No, what we’ve really got out of the this rumour is that the mention of Lara Croft and a new Tomb Raider still manages to excite a large populous and was done so around the time when a downloadable adventure is just around the corner. Coincidence?..
Thanks to everyone at the Tomb Raider Forums for your input.
