When I read the title of this next game I couldn’t help but chuckle. Ubisoft have announced Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for ‘consoles and handhelds’ with a release date of May 2010 (says 1up). The reason why I laughed was because the name seems like an inside joke by developers towards the big-wigs at Ubisoft. Last year’s reboot may have sold and played well but was criticised by long-time fans for straying too far into the ‘casual’ realm. Almost like “hey, did you forget about the Sands of Time? You know, the game that was awesome?”. As the name suggests, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will have similar mechanics to Sands of Time with “new gameplay innovations” being promised by Ubisoft. What’s worrying however is that The Forgotten Sands could turn out to be more of a movie tie-in game since Mike Newell’s big screen flick is released on May 28th (in the US). I’m hoping that won’t be the case due to Prince of Persia being first and foremost a video game franchise but it was a thought that crossed my mind when marrying up the vague May 2010 release date to the film’s. Fingers crossed.
