Another milestone has been reached for Apple as the App Store now has over 100,000 Apps to choose from. Before the gloating begins, I wonder what percentage of this number reflects Apps that are actually worthwhile. Not to rain on Apples parade but there is an awful lot of mediocre applications. But here’s Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller’s take on their achievement:
“The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world,” He continues, “The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating.”
A little too much for some who don’t want to pay as piracy is still a big problem for Apple. Out of the total, over 18,000 are games of some form although again, I’m fairly confident that the number of quality titles greatly differs from sub-par games. Despite what appears to be cynicism I do very much enjoy gaming, writing, surfing and a multitude of other tasks on my iPhone so will applaud Apple for such a goal. It would be nicer if the quality outnumbered the poor but if only 10% of the 100,000 are decent, we still have a considerable number of Apps to play with.
