Remember the saying ‘no publicity is bad publicity’? Some celebrities may disagree but for better or worse, Modern Warfare 2 has been getting a lot of attention recently. The latest faux pas is for a viral video released by developer Infinity Ward in the guise of a public service announcement warning of those who ‘overuse’ grenades in multiplayer matches. This could have been a clever and humorous viral short if not for fake sponsor’s name being Fight Against Grenade Spam – or FAGS for short. Yes I know what you’re thinking and yes it is intentional. Naturally the ever vocal gaming community wasn’t too pleased at such a thing resulting in the video being pulled from Infinity Ward’s YouTube channel but not from YouTube as a whole. Community manager Robert Bowling posted a tweet saying “I think the core gag is great, the end is a bit too far from the intent of the joke & can appreciate the concerns. Pulled.”
What seems most foolish on Infinity Ward’s part is rather than simply ridiculing grenade spammers, they’ve actually lightened the use of derogatory comments for online gaming. Since multiplayer events are rife with such unwanted phrases, the last thing we need is a developer lending a hand to further it. I’ve no doubt the concept did start with good intentions but somehow it’s got lost along the way.
